What to check with your local building department
- Whether a handrail is required for your stairs, ramp or deck, and its required height.
- Acceptable grip shape and size. Some model codes (for example the IRC section commonly cited for stair handrails) limit the cross-section of a graspable rail. The HT10 profile is rectangular (2-3/8" × 1-3/16" per Muzata's guide); ask whether that profile is acceptable for your stairs.
- Clearance between the rail and the wall, and strength or load requirements.
- Whether permits or inspection apply to your project.
